On This Day In Baseball History: March 27, 1992


The Brewers traded Gary Sheffield to the Padres for pitcher Ricky Bones and minor leaguers Jose Valentin and Matt Mieske. Over the next 18 years Sheffield made 9 All-Star games, finished second in the MVP voting in 2004, batted .296, hit 488 homers, drove in 1543 rbi,  and accumulated 58.8 WAR. In comparison Bones  made 1 All-Star team (1994) went on to pitch 1224 1/3 innings, compiled a 59-73 record, with an ERA of 4.85. Valentin played in 1638 games, batted .243 in 5539 career at bats and never made an All-Star game. And during Mieske’s 8 year Major League career he never had more than 374 at bats in a season.
