On This Day In Baseball History: March 29, 1867

Cy YoungDenton True Young, or Cy Young as he is known in the baseball world is born. The origin of his nickname is a little disputed. According to Young himself during a try out, “I almost tore the boards off the grandstand with my fastball. Cy came from the fences that were destroyed using his fastball. They looked like a cyclone had hit them.” Reporters later shorted Cyclone to Cy. One thing not in dispute is how great a pitcher he was. Young holds the Major League record for most career wins (511), loses (316), games stared (815), complete games (749), and innings pitched (7,356). He was so good that the yearly award given to the best pitcher of each league is awarded the “Cy Young Award”.
