On This Day In Baseball History: April 5, 1989

Orel Hershiser

In front of just over 20,000 fans are Riverfront Stadium Orel Hershiser‘s scoreless-inning streak ends at 59. Turns out it’s a good thing Hershiser pitched the 10th frame of the Dodgers/Padres 16 inning 1988 season finale to pass Don Drysdale‘s his then record of 58. Since Hershiser set the mark only three pitchers have reached 40 scoreless innings; Clayton Kershaw 41 (2014), Brandon Webb 42 (2007), and R.A. Dickey 44 (2012).
