On This Day In Baseball History: April 26, 1961

Roger Maris

New York Yankees right fielder Roger Maris finally homers in his teams 11th game of the season. Maris will hit 60 more homers in ’61 breaking baseball and Yankee legend Babe Ruth‘s single season record of 60. Maris will battle teammate Mickey Mantle for most of the year but will end the season ahead of Mantle and setting a new record that will stand until Mark McGwire hits 70 in 1998. Maris will be selected to the All-Star game and win the 1961 AL MVP.
