On This Day In Baseball History: April 29, 1986

Roger Clemens

Boston Red Sox 23-year old ace Roger Clemens breaks the Major League record for a 9 inning game by striking out 20 Mariners. He would match 20 strikeouts 10 years later in 1996. Kerry Wood would also strikeout 20 in 1998. Clemens will win both the AL Cy Young and MVP awards by leading the league in wins (24), ERA (2.38), and WHIP (0.969). He’ll finish he career with 4,672 strikeouts trailing only Randy Johnson (4,875) and Nolan Ryan (5,714). Unfortunately, Clemens’ greatness will be overshadowed by his PED use.
