Kerry Wood

Chicago Cubs 20-year old rookie Kerry Wood breaks a National League record, shared by Steve Carlton, David Cone, and Tom Seaver, and ties Roger Clemens‘ MLB record of 20 strikeouts in a nine inning game. Wood would win the NL Rookie of the Year in 1998 with a 13-6 record, 3.40 ERA, while striking out 233 in only 166 2/3 innings. His 12.58 K’s per nine innings in 1998 is third best single season strikeout rate ever among starters.
