On This Day In Baseball History: May 12, 1970

Ernie Banks

Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, hits his 500th career home run. Banks will hit 12 more homers over the next year and a half before retiring. Banks, an 11-time All-Star and a back-to-back MVP (1958 & 1959), at the time was the eighth man to accumulate 500 career homers. He joined Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Eddie Mathews, and Mel Ott. All seven of the others were in the Hall of Fame and Ernie would take his rightful place with them in 1977.
