On This Day In Baseball History: May 24, 2000

Mark McGwire

St. Louis first baseman Mark McGwire hits his 20th home run of the season becoming the fastest player in history to reach 20, doing so in 35 games. By doing so he breaks the previous record of 41 shared by Mickey Mantle (1956) and himself (1998). McGwire will miss almost all of July, August, and the first week of September, playing in only 89 games while hitting 32 homers. McGwire’s career will be over by the end of the following season.
