Cardinals ace Bob Gibson throws his 5th consecutive shutout by blanking the Pirates in game one of a doubleheader. Gibson will go on to have one of the greatest seasons by a pitcher ever. He led the NL in wins with 22, ERA at 1.12, tossed 28 complete games, a league leading 13 shutouts, 268 K, with a NL leading 0.853 WHIP. He was selected to the NL All-Star team, won a Gold Glove, the NL CY Young, and NL MVP.
