On This Day In Baseball History: June 29, 1990

Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela

Oakland’s Dave Stewart and LA Dodger Fernando Valenzuela toss no-hitters on the same day. Stewart’s A’s beat the Blue Jays 5-0 and Valenzuela’s Dodgers beat the Cardinals 6-0. The last time this happened was in 1917 when Hippo Vaughan and Fred Toney did it. It would be the biggest highest from an otherwise disappointing year for Fernando. He would finish the season 13-13 with a 4.59 ERA, allowing an NL most 104 ER in 204 IP. Stewart’s performance, however, was seemingly inevitable as 1990 was the best of a very dominant 4 year stretch. He finished his 1990 campaign 22-11 with a 2.56 ERA, while tossing 11 complete games and 4 shutouts in 267 innings. Stewart finished third in AL CY Young voting.
