On This Day In Baseball History: July 4, 1939


On Lou Gehrig day at Yankee Stadium Gehrig’s number will be the first number in baseball history to be retired. It is also the day he delivers one of the most famous speeches in sports history. Almost exactly one year and eleven months from the day of the speech Gehrig passes away from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease. On the field Gehrig was as much a part of the Yankees dominance as Babe Ruth.
