On This Day In Baseball History: July 13, 1999

In an All-Star game at Fenway Park in which Ted Williams is carted out to the mound to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, hometown pitcher Pedro Martinez does his best Carl Hubbell impersonation. Martinez started the game by striking out Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, and Sammy Sosa. Then to start the second inning he struck out Mark McGwire, Matt Williams singled, then Martinez struck out Jeff Bagwell and Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez threw out Matt Williams who was attempting to steal second to end the inning. Martinez’s performance earned him the game’s MVP award. He would go on to win his second consecutive and third AL Cy Young in four years. He would also finish second in AL MVP voting.
