Cleveland Spiders 23-year old rookie named Denton True “Cy” Young wins the first of what will be an all-time record 511 career wins. Cy Young would go on to play 22 Major League seasons winning as average of 23 games a year. His average year is remarkable; 37 games started, 34 complete games, 334 innings pitched, and 1,344 batters faced. In addition to holding the all-time record for wins he also holds the all-time record for losses; 316, games started; 815, complete games; 749, innings pitched; 7,356, hits allowed; 7,092, earned runs; 2,147, and batters faced; 29,565. He did play in a different era but so did a lot of other pitchers and he was better than his peers and we should recognize and appreciate his accomplishments.
