Chicago Cubs 26-year old starter Kerry Wood becomes the fastest pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts when he fans Jeff Kent in just his 134th career game. Wood passes Clemens who needed just 143 games. Wood, who won the NL Rookie of the Year in 1998 and tied the single game record for most strikeouts when he K’ed 20 Astros, will finish his 2003 season with a league leading 266 strikeouts, most strikeouts per 9 innings, 11.3 and fewest hits per 9 innings allowing just 6.5. Unfortunately, injuries would soon derail this career. 2
