On This Day In Baseball History: August 20, 1974

Nolan Ryan

California Angels starter Nolan Ryan strikesout 19 batters for the second time in eight days and the third time in 1974. Despite Ryan’s dominance he would ultimately take the loss as he was outduled by Detroit’s Mickey Lolich in 11-innings 1-0. Ryan is the only pitcher to strikeout 19 batters in three different games in the same season.
