The St. Louis Cardinals can trace their roots all the way back to 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings. Over the years they have been known as the St. Louis Brown Stockings (1882), St. Louis Browns (1883-1898), St. Louis Perfectos (1899), and finally as we know them today the St. Louis Cardinals (1900-Present). The organization has appeared in a total of 27 playoffs, won 23 pennants, and 11 world championships. They have retired 12 numbers. Ozzie Smith (1), Red Schoendienst (2), Stan Musial (6), Enos Slaughter (9), Tony LaRussa (10), Ken Boyer (14), Dizzy Dean (17), Lou Brock (20), Whitey Herzog (24), Bruce Sutter (42), Bob Gibson (45), and owner August Busch, Jr (85).
