On This Day In Baseball History: September 7, 1993

 

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder nicknamed “Hard Hittin'” Mark Whitten hits four homers in the second game of a doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium. Whitten became the 10th player in history to homer four times in a game joining, among others, Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig (1932), Chuck Klein (1936), Willie Mays (1961) and Mike Schmidt (1976). Whitten also drove in 12 runs tying Jim Bottomely’s record for most rbi in a single game. 1993 would prove to be the best year of Whitten’s career finishing the season with a .253 average, 25 homers, 99 rbi and 15 stolen bases. He would finish his career with 105 home runs.
