On This Day In Baseball History: September 8, 1996

Todd Hundley

New York Mets catcher Todd Hundley hits his 40th homer of the season. His homer puts him in two exclusive clubs. The first, he joins Mickey Mantle, who surpassed 40 homers four times, as the second switch hitter in history to have 40 homers in a season. They would later be joined by Ken Caminiti (1996, 40), Chipper Jones (1999, 45), Lance Berkman (2002, 42 & 2006, 45), Mark Teixeira (2005, 43), and Carlos Beltran (2006, 41). Hundley also joined Roy Campanella (1953, 41) and Johnny Bench (1970, 45 & 1972, 40) as the third catcher to accumulate 40 home runs in a season. They would later be joined by Mike Piazza (1997, 40 & 1999,40) and Javy Lopez (2003, 43).
