On This Day In Baseball History: September 16, 2002

Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson

Arizona Diamondbacks starter Curt Schilling strikes out his 300th batter of the season joining teammate Randy Johnson to become the first, and to date only, teammates to strikeout 300 batters in the same season. Schilling would finish the season with 316 K’s, 23 wins and come in second in Cy Young. Bested in all three categories only by Randy Johnson who struckout 334, won 24, and won the Cy Young by a comfortable margin. This was Schilling’s third season with 300 or more strikeouts tying him with Sandy Koufax and trailing only Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson who both tallied six 300 K seasons during their Hall of Fame careers.
