On This Day In Baseball History: October 1, 1961

Roger Maris

New York Yankees right fielder Roger Maris hits his 61st homer of the season breaking Babe Ruth‘s single season home run record. Along with the single season home run record Maris also lead the league in runs (132), rbi (141) and total bases (366) on his way to his second consecutive AL MVP award. On this day two years later the player who would break Maris’ record of 61 homers in a season was born, Mark McGwire.
