On This Day In Baseball History: October 15, 1988

An injured Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson comes off the bench to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 3-2 in his only at bat of the 1988 World Series. With a runner on second base and the count full Gibson puts a Dennis Eckersley slider into the right field seats. Gibson finished the 1988 season as the NL’s MVP and Eckersley finished second in AL CY Young voting.
