Catfish Hunter

Oakland Athletics ace Catfish Hunter is named American League CY Young. The 28-year old ace led the AL in wins (25), ERA (2.49), and WHIP (0.986), as well as tossing 23 complete games and six shutouts. Hunter and Oakland owner Charles Finley would end up having a dispute settled by an arbitrator who made Hunter the first free agent of the modern era allowing Hunter to sign with the Yankees for five years for $3.75 million, thus ushering in the free agent era.
