On This Day In Baseball History: November 7, 2005

Huston Street & Ryan Howard

Oakland Athletics closer Huston Street wins the American League Rookie of the Year award making him the second consecutive Athletic to win the award after teammate Bobby Crosby won it in 2004. Street earned the closers role only after Octavio Dotel got hurt. In a similar situation the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Jim Thome was injured allowing the Phillies to play an unproven 25-year old named Ryan Howard who would win the National League Rookie of the Year honors. Street beat out Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Howard was selected ahead of Willy Taveras.
