Free agent Nolan Ryan signs with the Houston Astros for $4.4 million over 4 years making him the first baseball player in history to earn $1 million a year. Ryan, who ultimately spent 9 years in Houston (1980-1988) awarded the Astros for their spending by striking out 1866 batters and a 3.13 ERA. Very impressive numbers considering Ryan was 33-41 during his time in Houston.
