Johnny Bench

 

Cincinnati Reds rookie catcher Johnny Bench is named NL Rookie of the Year by a vote of 10.5 to 9.5 over the Mets Jerry Koosman. Bench would go on to win two MVPs and was a leader of the 1970s Big Red Machine. He did however, give up a league leading 18 passed balls but also threw out 47% of potential base stealers.
